Hey Tim, have you read or know of the book the “Weather Machine” by Andrew Blum? In it, he covers his journey into what goes into a forecast which is really fascinating (including visiting remote weather stations and group behind the European models. Really fun stuff! One thing he mentions is that the ECMWF model (European) tends to be more accurate than GFS and apparently certainly more easier to work with from a research perspective too. Not sure if that’s still true though.
