As GA aircraft fly higher and higher, the risk of hypoxia increases. In August and September 2014, a Cirrus SR22T and a TBM 700 with two aboard were lost. Most recently, a Cessna 560 Citation was lost with five aboard. Hypoxia is a suspected cause. Hypoxia is a state of oxygen deficiency in the body sufficient to impair the brain and other organ functions. It is a subtle, insidious killer. What is it, how do we recognize it, and how do we prevent it?
I have been around aircraft for over 50 years and have decided to now work on my IFR rating. At 63 it has been a struggle at times but also rewarding. The IFR magazine has and continues to provide very valuable insight into the workings of the IFR environment.
